The American Dream Fighting in an Arena of Despair…

Hey, I didn’t see you there welcome to Headgraphics.net, my name is Patrick Yurick. Today I want to talk to you about James Naughtie’s radio series premiering on BBC radio 4 tilted American Dreams But first:

The Greeting of the day: What is your American dream?
Examples: Tough though it is:
• Two kids, a dog, a wife and a meaningful financial income
• Money and a way to make it to feel productive and have time for a social life and a couple vacations a year
• Work your but off to make a TON of money and retire at 40 to a life traveling the globe drinking and eating exotic things in exotic places with the ability to afford several maintained places across the globe you call home.

Article of the day: “Is the American Dream in business?” by James Naughtie
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/7482019.stm

Summation: This is the first in a four part series chronicling the state of the American dream through the observational eyes of an English foreigner. Naughtie talks about how middle class Americans are getting scared because of the, now seven year, economic decline. He focuses this first broadcast on the area of Detroit which was a once thriving business frontier in the age of industry. Slowly, in the last even years, the middle class American has become less and less hopeful that they will achieve their dreams as most have been just struggling to keep what they once thought was untouchable to financial distress, even if it was a small piece. Factors that have contributed to this distress are:
• Soaring gas prices
• Job outsourcing
• Continually rising national debt
• And many more

Positive connection: This article hit me in a very personal manner. In the past seven years I have seen my own family struggle with the same financial distresses that seem to be affecting everyone everywhere. During the nineties it seemed as if the world was rich with possibility of financial success, but these days in the world of money the world seems like the last couple weeks have been here in Maine – slightly sunny with a good chance of scattered thundershowers.
We, as a people, are facing dark times. Our economic stability seems bleak. Our ability to maintain ourselves as an American “Superpower” seems continually threatened, by ourselves and outsiders who seek to bring us down. Even worse, our environment is being threatened the most by the fallout of our inability to cohabitate on this planet.
So what is the answer? Well there isn’t one. No one thing will save us. That does not mean that we the people should succumb to despair. In life we are faced with dire potentials. We are born into a world and given consciousness with the knowledge that someday, if we survive long enough, will outlive those whom we are required to trust for safety. We are going to die. All that we have accomplished will be left behind and there is no guarantee that anything we do here will matter. Those are the facts we are born into.
We do have something though. We can build faith within ourselves. We can think positively and work towards making today just bearable enough to smile at. In the wake of everything dire that could possible befall us, this is all we have. The here and now to make a choice. We may lose all of our money and our possessions and lose everything we hold dear. It is a distinct possibility. Our choice right now is whether to fall into the fear of this possibility and to contribute to the negativity the pervades and fights to invade every facet of our existence, or we can bring into the world the only thing we have within our power to use in the fight against all that which is bleak and unforgiving – love and peace. Which first is felt through the self and then practiced with others. Make your choice.

Word of the day: COMPASSION (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compassion)

ORIGIN Middle English : via Old French from ecclesiastical Latin compassio(n-), from compati ‘suffer with.’

Well I hope you learned something, I know I did. Have an enlightening day, I hope I’ll see you again!

Can I get a price check on kung-fu and broccoli?

Hey, I didn’t see you there welcome to Headgraphics.net, my name is Patrick Yurick. Today I want to talk to you about a futuristic supermarket and the technologies that may or may not have an effect on our future But first:

The Greeting of the day: What is some kind of technological advance you wish you had in your life today to make it easier and why? (appropriate please
Examples
• Knowledge download capabilities (like neo and kung-fu)
• Instant bill consolidation and easy control
• Coffee that makes your teeth clean and your breath fresh while retaining it’s classic coffee drinking experience

Article of the day: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/7477124.stm
“A supermarket, but not as we know it” By Steve Rosenberg

Summation: In the western part of Germany, a town called Toenisvorst, is Germany’s new Future Store. In this supermarket shoppers are greeted with several innovations.
These include:
• A robotic shopping assistant named roger who tells you all about the innovations in the market.
• With you camera phone you can take pictures of barcodes as you shop and at the check out counter your shopping experience will be made that much shorter as you hand your phone to the automated teller that will ring you up based on your cell pics.
• Based on what you are scanning with your phone, as you shop, your phone will alert you to savings and things that you are looking for.
• Much much more.

Positive connection:

Technology is the devil. That is why I am going to delete this blog and destroy my Mac book. I also will not be buying the iphone 3G I was planning on purchasing after July 11th. (yay – PR for apple!)

Technology is not the devil, but it does engage our interest into what is called clever. When a supermarket like the one above is introduced the reactions from people vary. Some people I know would think this was “cool” while others would be horrified at the radical changes being introduced. “Why can’t it be more old-fashioned” one might say. My stance is that one should always engage change with conscious caution. Technology will not hurt you, but you can hurt you. An over reliance and dependency on technology and advancements that push you further away from a direct source of life (i.e. the environment, outdoor activities, the sun) can lead towards an unnatural living style that is derived from third-party living. This could mean that you are seeking out socializing through a computer. Or that you are staying inside and watching a documentary on the wilderness instead of going outside for a walk in the woods. The glamorous illusions will never compare to the natural wonders of this world. Prove me wrong.

As for this supermarket. Mankind has recently, in the past hundred years frown very reliant on the grocery store and other technological achievements for survival. I fear, sometimes, what would happen to me and those around me if these things were ripped out of our lives. I am trying to take steps to bring myself closer to living off of natural sources. This article reminded me of that.

Word of the day: Technology http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Technology
However, a strict definition is elusive; “technology” can refer to material objects of use to humanity, such as machines, hardware or utensils, but can also encompass broader themes, including systems, methods of organization, and techniques. The term can either be applied generally or to specific areas: examples include “construction technology”, “medical technology”, or “state-of-the-art technology”.

Well I hope you learned something, I know I did. Have an enlightening day, I hope I’ll see you again!

Jesus walks with Kanye, but does he judge him?

Good Morning from Headgraphics.net, my name is Patrick Yurick
Today we will be talking about the right to judge others citing the Bonaroo vs. Kanye West dispute. But first the greeting of the day.

Today’s greeting is what kind of (appropriate please) rap name would you have today and why? Demo-D-Hizzy, Art Official, D-Noun-Sir, Mandarin Syke

Story of the day - http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/7474827.stm

Kanye West is angry with Bonnaroo – Apparently they delayed him.

“This Bonnaroo thing is the worst insult I’ve ever had in my life,” the 31-year-old wrote.”This is the most offended I’ve ever been. This is the maddest I ever will be.” He said he was typing so hard he might break his computer.
West added that he could accept being labelled as, among other things, “arrogant, conceited, narcissistic”, but that critics should “never say I didn’t give it my all”.

Rap is art
Why are we interested in the story? (Why me?)
Buying the right to judge
Ability vs. Right
Judging others is ever ok?

My Stance – I think rap is an admirable art form. Kanye West is an artist and is as valid as anyone who creates. What this event connects to is the virus that is so pervasive within the modern American popularity driven sector of interest. This article seems to be written to furl the fires of the base level interest of the story as Kanye West vs. Bonaroo. Bonaroo seems like the big bad guy and Kanye gets the public reception of a picked on artist. BANG! The BBC has a story that people, me included, will read. Why? Why would I be gravitated to this story? Why would I even do a segment on this story? I am guilty. Yes its true. I am guilty like most for wanting to be included voyeuristically on a fight. I like the fact that I have bought into Kanye West, that’s right I own one of his CDs. This give me the right to listen to him. I also bought into the latent right to judge him. That is why I really bought it. That is why we buy into thousands of forms of entertainment, so we can enact our judging selves – which allows us to feel above others. I was attracted to this story because Kanye West is someone I have judged in the past and therefore feel able to read a story about his plite and make another judgment. But what is really pointed out is the fact that I feel comfortable judging my fellow man. Kanye is not better than me because he is famous, and I am not better than him because I can judge his rapping style because I have been exposed to it. Having the ability to judge does not give me the right to judge. Furthermore there is a distinct possibility that my own ability to judge any of my fellow man has been entirely an illusion. The article today is not the point. The point today has to do with the right to judge others. Do any of us have the right to judge people in any way? Let me know…

The word of the day is Judgment – (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Value_judgment)
A value judgment is a judgment of the rightness or wrongness of something, or of the usefulness of something, based on a personal view. As a generalization, a value judgment can refer to a judgment based upon a particular set of values or on a particular value system. A related meaning of value judgment is an expedient evaluation based upon limited information at hand, an evaluation undertaken because a decision must be made.

I am the RIVER DOLPHIN!!!

Good morning from Headgraphics.net, my name is Patrick Yurick
Today we will be talking about the path to peace being forged in the world of
whaling.

The greeting of the day:

What whale/dolphin do you feel like today and why? (i.e. Humpback whale, blue whale, bottle nosed dolphin, killer whale, or another kind)

River Dolphin - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/River_dolphin

Article of the day - http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/7472228.stm

The International Whaling Commission has decided to reform its past stances on whaling in hopes of decreasing whale deaths. This means in countries such as Chile, Japan, New Zealand, and others. This would allow permits for some acceptable forms of whaling in hopes of decreasing illegal whaling, which almost all of the whaling in recent years has been.

My stance – while this is a tricky subject to deal with, I cannot condemn the efforts of the IWC for trying to make peace. Personally I believe in nonviolence, but I do condone traditional forms of hunting. I agree with hunting if people who are honoring the life they are taking by being extremely conscious of their intrinsic involvement in the food chain. This article does not address the motives underlying in the percentages of who is whaling and who is not so I cannot judge who the IWC is allowing to whale.
The article did mention trying to provide a solution to the impasse that had currently been locked in with whaling countries and this move towards a solution may be indicative of the beginning of moving towards a long term solution. When we compromise, or forgive, we are not giving up – we are evolving and this has to be the goal of man’s mission towards coexistence on this earth – otherwise there will be no end to the violence committed by those who are unwilling to compromise.

Word of the day - Whaling – Oxford American dictionary the practice or industry of hunting and killing whales for their oil, meat, or whalebone.
Wikipedia on whaling: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whaling

Music of the day:
“You Can Call me Al” by Paul Simon
“Prince of Parties” by Flight of the Concords
